The new Safe Neighborhoods Act would create tougher penalties for gang offenders, which will help keep them off our streets.

If passed, the statewide initiative also would provide more in the way of intervention and prevention programs, a critical element that goes hand in hand with stepping up enforcement.

This two-pronged approach appears to be a good measure to put before the voters on the November ballot and, although preliminary at this point, it definitely deserves consideration.
