An initiative known as the Safe Neighborhoods Act qualified for placement on California's November ballot this week, and Butte County Sheriff Perry Reniff couldn't be happier.
"What Proposition 1A did for cities and counties, the Safe Neighborhoods Act will do for law enforcement," Reniff said.
1A, passed overwhelmingly in 2004, prohibited the state from withholding locally generated revenues like property and sales tax from cities and counties.
The act, generally referred to as an anti-gang initiative, would provide increased penalties for felons and gang members found in possession of firearms, and target street gang members who participate as accomplices in crimes.
