Heaving is caused when low temperatures freeze the ground and warming up expands and pushes the ground upwards which leads to uprooting the plants. Easterly facing plants face this problem more as morning sun heats the ground up, leaving plants unable to cope up with changing temperatures. You can avoid this by creating a mound around every plant to minimize effects of heaving.

In winter time, you can very well utilize old pots for protection plants from cold weather at night. Remove these pots the very next morning so that they can get the needed sun. Move the potted plants in protected area at night so that it is easier for you to protect the plants from cruel chills at night.
